Avoid panda eyes and keep lashes looking long with one of these tried-and-tested smudge-proof formulas

Mascara has been used to frame and emphasise our eyes ever since Egyptian times, and thousands of years later it is still an essential for make-up bags across the globe. However, while the mascara the pharaohs used was made from kohl and crocodile dung, thankfully make-up has advanced a little bit since then, and brands are constantly bringing out new formulas for long-lasting, luscious lashes.

As our lives become busier and more fast-paced, the consumer is demanding more from their mascara, and waterproof formulas that allow us to transition from desk, to gym, to drinks without a smudge are now a make-up bag staple.

We’ve tested the best waterproof mascaras on offer. We judged them on how they made our lashes look, how easy they were to apply and, more importantly, remove. We also took into consideration whether the mascaras were cruelty free, to see if any animals were tested on during the production of the mascaras. We tested for waterproofness with some rigorous tests including walking in snow storms, doing sweat-inducing spin classes and post-breaking up crying. These were the products that came out on top.

Bourjois Volume Reveal Waterproof Mascara: £10.98, Feel Unique

With its “lash catcher” brush with grippy bristles, this one ensures that even the shortest of lashes is heightened and volumised. The silky formula keeps the eyelashes separated for definition, without any clumps. There is an inbuilt magnifying mirror on the side for on-the-go checks, however given this withstood rain, sweat and a long bath in our testing, we doubt that you will need to use it. Easy to remove, this works for a minimal look or you can layer up for a more dramatic effect.

Eyeko Sport Waterproof Mascara: £19, Eyeko

Now you can work your lashes while working out, as this product from celebrity favourite Eyeko is designed not to smudge or run as you sweat. We tried it in the gym and during a rainy netball match, and it did not budge at all. The curved brush allows you to catch every lash and lengthen for a pretty, framed look. The squeezy tube means you won’t have to be scraping the barrel for any remaining product, and this came off relatively easy with eye make-up remover. All Eyeko’s products are cruelty-free.

No 7 Lash Impact Waterproof Mascara: £13.50, Boots

With its blue, glittery casing, this one will be easy to find in your make-up bag. And, thanks to its lengthening brush, it will also brighten up your eyes. This mascara gave us the best length out of all the ones tested, and withstood rainy conditions. This is an excellent choice for those who want lash length over thickness. It feels very lightweight and came off effortlessly at the end of the day, making it a solid all-rounder. Available in black or brown.
